Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma

Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma training video provides an in-depth overview of the trauma ultrasound (FAST) exam utilized in the emergency or critical care setting. Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma includes ultrasound scan techniques to perform the (FAST) examination, identification of normal and abnormal anatomy associated with trauma, and evaluation of pneumothorax. Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma is approved for a maximum of: 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma:

  • Ultrasound Evaluation of the Hemoperitoneum
  • Ultrasound Evaluation of the Hemopericardium
  • Ultrasound Evaluation of the Hemothorax
  • Ultrasound Evaluation of the Pneumothorax

Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma Objectives:

1. Increase the participants’ knowledge and competence to perform and/or interpret trauma ultrasound examinations.

2. State the imaging views and the ultrasound characteristics of the anatomy evaluated when performing trauma ultrasound.

3. Recognize ultrasound characteristics associated with hemoperitoneum, hemopericardium, hemothorax, and pneumothorax.

4. Perform ultrasound evaluation of pneumothorax.

Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma Target Audience:

Physicians, PAs, NPs, Sonographers, and any other medical professionals involved with the ultrasound evaluation of trauma patients. Practice specialties may include

(but are not limited to) emergency medicine, critical care, trauma surgeons, hospitalists, radiologists, internal medicine and primary care.

Using ultrasound to detect early signs of preterm labor

Researchers from North Carolina State University, Institut Langevin and Paris-Descartes University have conducted a proof-of-concept study that raises the possibility of using ultrasound techniques to detect cervical stiffness changes that indicate an increased risk of preterm labor in pregnant women. While additional work needs to be done, it may ultimately give doctors a new tool for determining when to provide treatment that can prevent preterm birth.

Ultrasound used to diagnose minor bone fractures

Ultrasound is set to play a significant role in detecting minor fractures in the future, according to a new study. The move would reduce exposure to radiation, as well as providing an alternative when radiology units are closed.

rib-fracture-2aThe authors conducted a study of the usefulness and efficiency of portable ultrasound in detecting the presence of minor fractures in patients presenting to a minor injuries unit. Analysis showed that 85% of patients with a fracture confirmed by X-ray had injuries detected through ultrasonography. North Dakota, Oregon, and New Mexico are the First Three Statesregistered sonographers Requiring Sonographers to be Registered by an Organization!

April 2, 2015

North Dakota has now become the 3rd State in the country (the two others being Oregon and New Mexico) to pass a law requiring Sonographers to be licensed by the state. Credentialing through nationally recognized agencies such as the ARDMS and CCI will be acceptable forms of documentation.
